A good face wash clears excess oil, dirt and sunscreen without leaving your skin squeaky-tight or red. Each skin type needs a different lather and formula — the tool below points you to the right group in thirty seconds.

Oily, acne-prone skin: thorough but not harsh
Choose a gel or light foaming cleanser labelled for oily or acne-prone skin. Common ingredients here are salicylic acid (BHA), niacinamide and zinc. Twice a day is enough — over-washing can make skin produce more oil. See cleansers for oily skin.
Dry and sensitive skin: low foam, added moisture
Pick a soap-free cream, milk or gel with a skin-friendly pH and no fragrance. Ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid stop that tight feeling after washing. Patch-test on your jaw for 24 hours first. See cleansers for sensitive skin.
Normal or combination skin: a gentle gel is easiest
A low-pH gel cleanser clears the T-zone without drying your cheeks. If you wear makeup or water-resistant sunscreen, remove it first in the evening, then wash.
Wash your face properly in 60 seconds
Wet your face with cool or lukewarm water, never hot.
Lather in your hands, then massage gently for 30–60 seconds.
Rinse your hairline and jaw, and pat dry with a clean towel.
